Prospect Burma
We don't know what will happen in Burma tomorrow, but it is important that we are ready for change and transition when it takes place.

Therefore I want to be part of the struggle to build a more peaceful and just society, and use the skills I have gained to benefit the country as a whole.
An Exceptional Gift

An outstanding gift of £11,689 was made in June by the philanthropical Funding Network, thanks to long-term Prospect Burma supporter Nick Salter. Mr Salter has been a member of the Funding Network (TFN) for a couple of years, and sponsored Prospect Burma to make a presentation at a Network meeting alongside four other charities, each seeking donations towards their work. The Funding Network is an informal affiliation of individuals from a variety of backgrounds with the common purpose of using their material prosperity to fund social change – in effect it acts as a ‘marketplace’ bringing together those who wish to give and those representatives of small charities that are eager for support.

In an evening sponsored by international bankers Coutts & Co., the TFN members heard short presentations from all five of the charities attending, including Prospect Burma, followed by a strategic question and answer session on their work and the impact it had on the people who benefited from their programmes. Each of the charities worked in a different part of the world, and addressed different charitable needs. Prospect Burma’s Chairman, Martin Morland, led our presentation. Martin, British Ambassador to Burma at the time of the 1988 uprising, spoke in broad terms of Prospect Burma’s origins, our links with Aung San Suu Kyi, and our scholarship programme. He also outlined our educational work, the English Language School we support in Delhi, and support for teacher training and other projects on Burma’s borders. Zoya Phan, a Karen student who had been part funded by Prospect Burma, spoke passionately about her life as a refugee, of the burning of her village, and her escape through the jungle to Thailand. She thanked Prospect Burma for the help it had given her to realise her seemingly impossible dream of getting an education. Having graduated in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in Development Studies at the University of East Anglia, Zoya’s prime desire is to one day return to the country of her birth and to do all she can to help her homeland. After all the charitable presentations had been completed, members of the Funding Network pledged donations to the charities of their choice. Over £49,000 was raised during the course of the evening, with an exceptional award of £10,000 being made to Prospect Burma. After Gift Aid had been added on, the grand total towards our scholarship programme was £11,689, for which Prospect Burma’s Board wishes to thank members of the Funding Network, including Nick Salter.
