Raising money for Prospect Burma's Scholarship programme and the other projects it supports in India and Thailand is a never-ending task, and one that demands a constant stream of fresh ideas to keep up the momentum.
The popularity of our new Adopt-A-Scholarship scheme is growing, with a steady stream of new supporters pledging their help. To date they have pledged almost £35,000 for scholarships in Public Health, Nursing, Teacher Training, Agriculture, Engineering, Administration and Ecology over the next 3-4 years. Each part-Scholarship costs £550, and will ensure that a Burmese student gets the help they need to continue their studies at an overseas university. While the majority of pledges are for one year only, some supporters have felt able to offer multiple pledges for up to 5 years, which makes the setting up of a much needed skills bank in Burma more achievable in the future. Prospect Burma's Trustees are also now proposing to set up a new initiative encouraging our supporters to arrange local events or talks to spread the word about our work. Work has started on a new Prospect Burma Information Pack, which will contain key information and background on both Burma and on Prospect Burma's Scholarship programme and the other projects that we support, plus a selection of photographs and fundraising ideas. Although raising the profile of the organisation is recognised as a real priority, limited staff and resources means that we cannot run events as frequently as we would like. Trustees are hoping that we will be able to draw together a robust list of supporters who would be prepared to give a talk and/or run a local event to improve Prospect Burma's profile in the community as well as raising some much-needed cash support for our work. You would not need to be an expert on Burma to take part in this new initiative - just have the enthusiasm and motivation to set something up in your own neighbourhood. If you are interested in taking part and would like to offer yourself as a speaker, or run a community event to help us achieve our goals, or if you want more information on the Adopt-A-Scholarship Scheme, please contact Agnes Meadows at the Prospect Burma office:
