Prospect Burma's Summer Event held in June 2011, raised over £20,000 to support the education of Burmese students. Maureen Lipman CBE was Guest of Honour and relayed a message sent especially for the event by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Viscount Slim read out a message of support from HRH The Prince of Wales, and Dr Sasa spoke on behalf of all Prospect Burma students about the impact education has had on his life. Tina Blick provided magnificent canapes and PB alumnus, Joshua Htet, put together a Burmese band to provide the entertainment. The fundraiser, held to mark PBs 22nd anniversary and the 66th birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on June 19th, was held at Bloomsbury Auctions in Mayfair. The event included a part live and part silent auction and a table top draw. The week before the party, the raffle was drawn and the lucky winner of the first prize of a week's holiday in Hong Kong courtesy of Cathay Pacific and The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong was announced. |

On March 3rd the final phase of training for the 317 Community Health Workers started by Prospect Burma alumnus, Dr Sasa, was completed with a graduation ceremony and we send huge congratulations to each one of them, and to Sasa whose dedication and commitment has been an inspiration. All but 20 of the community health workers have now returned to their villages in remote locations in the Chin hills to put into practice all they have learnt about preventing disease and offering basic health care. The 20 who have remained at the Health and Hope will act as further training coordinators. It is the most amazing achievement from an exceptional young man and you can read more about Sasa on our Students Stories page in the "About" Section.

The following excerpt is taken from Irrawaddy magazine.
Q: The exiled Burmese community is becoming larger and larger. Hundreds of thousands of Burmese have left their country illegally, most of them from the younger generation. You have often spoken about the importance of education and helping the young to realize their potential. What are your plans for young people living inside and outside the country? What is your message to them?
A: The reason I want to have contact with young people living outside Burma is to promote the importance of education. They—especially those living in Western countries—have many more educational opportunities than young people living in Burma. That's why I want them to have contact with each other. I don't want young people living overseas to forget those remaining inside. I don't think they will forget. Many of them have been involved in blogging and other Internet-related activities, so I don't think they have forgotten the situation inside their country. I think they will believe in their strength and continue to stand for their people. |

Prospect Burma joins Aung San Suu Kyi's family and the Burmese people in welcoming her release from house arrest and hopes that it may mark the beginning of meaningful dialogue and peaceful change.
In due course we will be able to tell her of the work you have enabled us to do, and of the hundreds of Burmese students whose education you have funded.
It is now more important than ever that we continue to forge ahead with our scholarship programme. All our students commit to return to Burma with their skills when they can.
If you would like to make a donation to mark her release you can do so on line by clicking the Just Giving button at the top right hand corner of this page. On behalf of all our students, thank you for your support. |
